The mother of a 9-year-old boy who was fatally struck by a car Wednesday night in Mount Vernon is grieving the loss of her son this Mother’s Day weekend.
Drew Faustin was struck by the vehicle as he tried to cross South Columbus Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Close family friends say he was just a week shy of his 10th birthday.
The driver, 27-year-old Janay Ruiz, stayed on the scene and was not charged. Police say they believe this was a tragic accident.
News 12's Laura Haefeli spoke to the victim's sister, who says the family is still at a loss for words.
"I want them to remember him as kind, fun,” says Faustin’s sister Bryanna. “He was very selfless. He likes to help people. He's only 9, he can only do but so much for others, but whatever he could do he would do."
