Hundreds across Westchester honored the lives lost on 9/11 at memorials on Thursday.

Yonkers officials held a memorial at Conor Park.

Mount Vernon officials held one at the City Hall Plaza.

City leaders say 26 Yonkers residents and five Mount Vernon residents died on 9/11.

“The only thing that the families ask for is that you don’t forget them," says Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.

"They don't want anyone to forget," says Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard.

Some who knew people who died were in attendance.

"I have a special young lady that went to school with my son that passed away, Rochelle Snell," says Mount Vernon resident Marilyn Harding. "She was friends of the whole family, not just my son, but my son and her grew up together."

City leaders also honored the first responders on 9/11 and those who died or have 9/11 related illnesses.

A total of 13 Yonkers first responders died from the effects of working at ground zero.

"I was there at the center of ground zero," says Yonkers Police Department Deputy Chief Richard Alaimo. "New York City Police started bringing in the families of the people that were missing to show them that this is not a rescue mission, but a recovery mission and you can see the anguish and pain and suffering on most people's faces."
