Today is the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on America.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, including nearly 250 people from the Hudson Valley. More than 100 of them called Westchester home, while 80 people from Rockland also lost their lives. Forty-four people from Orange County died that fateful day, and 11 lives from Putnam County were lost.
Observances took place across the region, including a special ceremony that honored those killed from Westchester. Hundreds of people were expected to attend the ceremony from "The Rising" at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.
"The Rising" is the county's memorial to the 111 Westchester victims of 9/11. It was officially dedicated in 2006 on the fifth anniversary of the attacks. The victims' families chose the spot as well as the design created by architect Fredrick Swartz. Steel beams reach 80 feet into the sky and intertwine at the top. At the bottom of the circle of remembrance, there stones engraved with the names of all the victims along with personal inscriptions chosen by the families.
People coming the plaza also passed through the fallen memorial walkway, dedicated to Westchester soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
