On the eve of the 18th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, local communities honored the lives lost.

The Hawthorne Fire Department held a ceremony Tuesday night to remember the brave heroes.

They also honored local volunteer firefighter and FDNY member Mike Lyons.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is making sure public schools honor Sept. 11 with a moment of silence. A new state law will help ensure those who died will not be forgotten.

The governor hopes the new measure will open up dialogue in the classroom.

The goal is to help future generations gain a better understanding of the attacks.
