Hollywood producer helps Newburgh family in Batten disease battle
An Orange County woman and her terminally ill daughter are getting some much-needed help from a Hollywood producer in a similar situation.
For the first 5 years of her life, Brianna Skriver seemed to be a healthy little girl. Now, she can no long walk, talk or swallow. She's already exceeded her life expectancy after being diagnosed with a rare degenerative neurological condition called Batten disease.
"It's been so hard to watch your child regress. A child you had conversations with and danced with," says Tammy Skriver, of Newburgh.
She now devotes her life to the 24-hour care her daughter requires. Recently, she got some help thanks to an unlikely connection through social media.
"All my friends started tagging me in posts from different celebrities that were tweeting about 'Cure Batten.'"
Within days, Skriver got a phone call and a $10,000 check from Hollywood movie producer Gordon Grey, who is responsible for hits like "Invincible" and "The Game Plan."
Grey created Curebatten.org after his own daughters were diagnosed with the genetic disease.
"We want a cure so no other family has to go through this kind of pain," he told News 12.
