The holiday season is often considered one of the most joyous times of the year, but it can also be a dangerous time when it comes to fires.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) wants people to know that most home fires are sparked by Christmas tree lights, decorations and candles. They say it's important to make sure all holiday lights are working properly and electrical circuits are not overloaded.
People are also being reminded to handle real Christmas trees with care. "We never want to see unattended candles or candles that are too close to a tree or any decorations or, of course, a tree too close to any kind of radiator or heat source," says CPSC Chairman Elliot Kaye.
Officials also say this is a good time of the year to change the batteries in home smoke detectors.
