According to school officials, a container holding Nitric Acid gave out. Three students and a teacher required medical attention, but all are said to be OK.
Emails and text messages were sent out to parents alerting them to the situation and instructing them to pick up their kids because classes were dismissed for the day.
Some parents told News12 the state's new bell-to-bell cellphone ban caused them extra worry because they were unable to contact their kids directly, but others say district officials did a good job of informing them of the situation. Students were not allowed back into the building as professional cleaners were brought in to deal with the spill. All the cellphones remained in the building overnight in the protective pouches the district uses as part of the cellphone ban, and students will get them back today.
