State Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson says she plans to be the next mayor of Mount Vernon.
"I'm in this race, underdog or the first dog, I'm running," she says.
She came in third in the Democratic primary. After nearly a month of keeping a low profile, she launched her general election campaign Wednesday as the mayoral candidate for the Working Families Party.
Hassell-Thompson will face off against Democratic nominee Richard Thomas and Councilwoman Deborah Reynolds. There were even rumors that Mayor Ernie Davis would spearhead a write-in campaign.
Davis denied those rumors when News 12 spoke to him Wednesday, saying he will use his remaining months in office to leave the city in the best possible shape for the next mayor.
