More than 60 years after serving his country, a World War II veteran from Harrison received the highest honor from the state Tuesday.
Armin Schaper, 88, served overseas as a submarine bomber pilot in WWII, flying in low to attack German subs. Schaper received the Conspicuous Service Medal, the highest honor a veteran can receive in New York State. Schaper was acknowledged not only for his service to the country and military, but also for his exploits and deeds as a civilian.
The honor was delayed because Schaper?s military paperwork, along with millions of others, was lost in a fire at a military records office in St. Louis more than 30 years ago. Schaper says he's truly touched to receive his award in light of the military personnel currently serving overseas.
