The Mount Vernon Police Department says a person has been arrested in connection to the deadly shooting of an 18-year-old from Mount Vernon.
Officials say Tamani Turner, of Mount Vernon, was shot around 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Garden Avenue and East Fourth Street.
Police say 33-year-old Akeem Grant, of Mount Vernon, was arrested for Turner’s death.
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said the incident has left the community feeling afraid, angered and traumatized.
Turner is the third teenager this year to be killed in the city. He was 18 years old.
Mount Vernon City School District officials said Turner was a ninth-grade student at Mount Vernon High School.
School officials offered their condolences.
Students were off this week, but school officials said counselors will be available starting Monday.
Turner previously attended Graham School.
Police remained tight-lipped Friday night but said the investigation is underway.
Mount Vernon Chief of Police Marcel Olifiers said Friday the department received multiple calls of shots fired.
"Officers were dispatched to the scene, they arrived at the scene and began their investigation. We then were notified by New Rochelle that a victim had shown up to Montefiore Hosptial with gunshot wounds to the chest," Olifiers said.
Turner was taken into surgery but succumbed to his injuries Thursday around 7:30 p.m.
