Two college students with guns were arrested outside a New Rochelle elementary school Friday afternoon.
The principal of the Barnard Early Childhood Center called police at around 1:40 p.m. after some aides and monitors heard popping sounds while outside with kids. A spokesperson for the district says someone spotted a man with what looked like a rifle.
The building, which has over 500 students from kindergarten to second grade, was immediately placed on lockdown.
Police say they apprehended the suspects in the playground. They had pellet guns in their possession.
The lockdown was lifted at 2:15 p.m. To reassure parents, New Rochelle officers were stationed at every school during the district's dismissal.
No injuries were reported.
Authorities have identified the suspects as Monroe College students who were hunting squirrels. They have been charged with reckless endangerment.
