Gov. Kathy Hochul said she's willing to work with the state Legislature in the new year to amend parts of bail reform if lawmakers deem it necessary.
The controversial law got rid of the option for judges to set cash bail for most lower-level and non-violent crimes starting last year.
Criminal justice reform advocates applauded the change because they said the previous bail laws disproportionately affected people of color and those who couldn't afford their release even for minor crimes.
But pro-law enforcement groups argue loosening the laws has led to more people re-offending after getting released for crimes because bail isn't an option.
Hochul said if any changes are made, they need to strike a balance for both sides.
"To make the changes if necessary to, first of all, protect public safety number one but ensure we have a system of true justice for all individuals as well," says Hochul
