Gov. Kathy Hochul could sign a new bill into law this week designed to help bartenders recognize the signs of human trafficking.
Sen. James Skoufis co-sponsored the bill and held a news conference Tuesday in Monroe.
He says New York ranks fourth in the nation for the highest rate of human trafficking.
The law would add training to other programs currently offered by the state Liquor Authority.
Skoufis says bartenders are often on the front line when it comes to witnessing possible abuse.
“That’s why there’s really been such an emphasis on trying to get hotels, motels, restaurants and similar service-oriented establishments to place a greater focus on trying to identify human trafficking," says Skoufis.
Hochul has until the end of the week to sign the bill into law.
