Gov. Andrew Cuomo was at Stony Brook University on Thursday to announce a new initiative to keep Long Island's drinking water safe.
Cuomo said he wants to spend $6 million for a study of the Island's drinking water, specifically to get better data on a 3-mile toxic plume in the Bethpage and Massapequa water districts.
He said the so-called Grumman plume needs further study, and since the federal government was "reluctant to do testing on the plume, the state now will do its own testing to prove who is responsible and where the plume is actually going."
"We will find out exactly what is in that plume, and information is power. Once we know what it is, we will know what we are dealing with and then we can have an intelligent plan for the remediation," he said.
Cuomo also announced that he will study and possibly regulate more of Long Island's mulch industry, which was recently found in a county study to be adding pollutants to groundwater.
