A wanted fugitive from Peru is now in custody after he was arrested in the Town of Goshen for allegedly attacking his parents with makeshift weapons.
Police say Marco Briceno Escobar blew his cover after he went on a violent rampage and broke his mother’s wrist on Friday.
“Somehow, he avoided being arrested, coming across the border and ended up here in Goshen,” said Town of Goshen Police Chief James Post.
Post says they found out Escobar was wanted for murder by the Department of Homeland Security and authorities in his native country of Peru after they arrested him for assaulting his parents at their home on Jessup Switch Road in the black dirt area of town.
Escobar allegedly attacked his parents with a shovel and a large, wooden stick. Police say his frightened 12-year-old sister called 911 for help.
Police gave News 12 photos of his mother’s injuries and one of the weapons the 26-year-old allegedly used.
They say Escobar had a New York state driver’s permit and was living in New York for the past three months.
They say until they took his fingerprints, no one knew Escobar was a fugitive.
“He was a few months away from getting his driver’s license and living out his life in Goshen,” said Post.
Authorities charged Escobar with assault and harassment with a weapon.
H’s being held in Orange County Jail on bail, but prosecutors say he can’t be released even if he makes bail, since U.S. Immigrations and Customs put a hold on his case.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for more information on Escobar’s fugitive status and the allegations in Peru, but has not heard back.
