A gas leak prompted thousands of students and staff to evacuate New Rochelle High School Wednesday morning.
Officials at the school located at 265 Clove Road enacted emergency procedures around 10 a.m. after a strong odor of gas was detected near a boiler.
Firefighters and Con Ed crew members searched the inside of the building for the source of the odor. A Con Ed spokesperson says there was some gas leaking from a boiler inside the building, with the odor seeping into the ventilation system.
A district spokesperson say two people, a custodian and a security guard, reported feeling sick after smelling the strong gas odor. As a precaution, they were sent to the hospital to be examined and then promptly released early Wednesday afternoon.
The roughly 3,500 students and staff waited outside for about an hour before the all-clear was given. They returned inside for the rest of the school day.
Firefighters tell News 12 that the school maintains its boiler and is up to date on inspections. Con Ed suggests that the school move its vents to avoid a similar situation.
