Friends and family of Sgt. Merlin German gathered at his alma mater in Hartsdale Friday for a memorial dedicated to him.

German was critically injured in 2005 by a roadside bombing that left the Marine with burns over 97 percent of his body. He was only given a 3 percent chance to survive, but managed to overcome those odds for three years.

In addition to serving his country, those paying tribute acknowledged the charity work German was involved with after his injury. German started a burn foundation for children called Merlin's Miracles after his injury.

"I think he's smiling at us, very proud of his achievements in life," said his sister, Lawren German-Diaz.

Mourners say they'll remember a man who was always helping others and making the best out of any situation he was faced with.
