Former Westchester County Legislator Bernice Spreckman, who earned the nickname "Unsinkable Spreckman" when a Carnival cruise she organized for seniors got stranded without power for days off the California coast in 2010, died Thursday. She was 82.
She represented parts of Yonkers and Mount Vernon for 20 years until she retired last year.
Spreckman, a Republican who hailed from Yonkers, also served on the city council.
Spreckman's motto was "people before politics."
She is survived by her three children and eight grandchildren.
A memorial in her honor is set for Monday.
