Firefighters battled an early morning house fire at 30 South Bleeker St. in Mount Vernon Saturday.
Investigators say a police officer on routine patrol saw the flames and sprang into action.
Police say they rescued one man dangling from a third story window. Five other people, including a family on the second floor, were brought to safety. Everyone was able to escape without injury.
The Red Cross is helping those displaced by the fire, which is still under investigation.
