A Cortlandt Manor man who worked as a firefighter for decades and spent time with rescue and recovery crews after the Sept. 11 terror attacks was laid to rest on Friday.

Hundreds of firefighters stood shoulder to shoulder with heavy hearts as they paid their final respects to retired FDNY firefighter Michael O'Hanlon. The 30-year veteran of the force died this week of related cancer at the age of 59. Family members say the disease was a result of his time spent at Ground Zero.

Fellow firefighters say O'Hanlon deeply devoted his life to serving Engine 68, Ladder 49, putting his life on the line to serve others. They say he was a skilled accordion player, a wicked proud Irish-American and that he will be remembered for his big heart, smile and bravery.

Westchester County plans to honor fallen heroes like O'Hanlon at the annual Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.
