Hundreds of workers in the Premier shoe factory got quite a scare Monday morning when a fire forced an evacuation of the building.
Around 9 a.m. firefighters received a call about flames in the back of the factory on 242nd Street and Bronx Boulevard. According to Fire Chief Kevin Scalon, a maintenance worker was fighting the fire with an extinguisher when the flames overwhelmed him. Four firefighters and one worker suffered minor injuries.
One worker, who declined to go into further detail, said that this is not the first time the Premier shoe factory has had a problem with fires.
Workers were escorted back into the building around 10:15 a.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
