A Rockland County family is homeless after a fast-moving fire ripped through their home on Old Hempstead Road in New City on Saturday morning.
Investigators say the family is lucky to be alive after the fire that broke out in their basement. Firefighters arrived on the scene at around 9 a.m. to find smoke billowing from the windows and the fire spreading to the top floor.
The stubborn flames and snowy conditions made battling the blaze even more difficult.
All five people inside the home were treated for smoke inhalation at a nearby hospital and are expected to be OK.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
