Drivers on I-95 faced big delays Friday afternoon after a fire erupted when a tractor-trailer slammed into a toll plaza.
The crash occurred at northbound exit 16 in New Rochelle just after 2 p.m. The driver of the truck, Kisshaun Scott, says he had put the truck into park and was paying the toll when he saw sparks coming from the engine and smelled smoke.
Scott says he tried to put the fire out with his extinguisher, but quickly realized he wasn't going to be able to get the blaze under control. Toll booth workers say they evacuated as soon as they heard what sounded like an engine blowing up.
Firefighters worked to get the box truck that was wedged between one of the toll plaza lanes unstuck. They say the blaze consumed the toll plaza, but the structure is OK.
No injuries have been reported.
Thruway officials say most of the northbound lanes on I-95 reopened in time for the evening commute, but they are still determining when all lanes will be back in operation.
Scott and his coworker were driving the truck from Manhattan to Boston. They work for a company that buys and sells used vehicles, and say the truck was empty when it caught fire.
