A demolition crew tore down two Yonkers homes that were in danger of collapsing after a fire tore through them, leaving families homeless.
Crews used heavy equipment to demolish 53 and 55 Herriot St. Monday, a day after the fast-moving fire left the homes uninhabitable and in danger of collapsing.
Fire officials believe that the fire started Sunday afternoon in the back of one of the buildings before spreading to the other building next door. Investigators couldn't go inside after the flames were extinguished because of the instability of the buildings.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but investigators haven't ruled out arson.
The Red Cross is assisting five families that were left homeless by the fire.
