Foley served as a first responder for 22 years, beginning in the Bronx with the FDNY. He also spent time at ground zero following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
News 12 is told his late brother Tommy was also an NYC firefighter who tragically passed away on 9/11. Foley spent more than a week searching the rubble before bringing his brother’s body home.
FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro spoke on the tragedy, saying in part, "Five children without a dad. Two brothers who've died as a result of this. It's a terrible tragedy."
As a tribute to a hometown hero, his helmet was presented to his youngest son to continue the Foley legacy.
This tragedy marks the 221st member of the FDNY to pass away from a 9/11-related illness.
"Terrible thing for this department to have to deal with, but we do. We turn out, we support the families each time," assured Commissioner Nigro.
