(05/26/08) YONKERS ? Friends, family members and fellow cabbies held a special memorial drive Monday to honor a slain cab driver.
Geraldo Guitierrez, 29, was stabbed and robbed while doing his job last Thursday night. Although he managed to drive away after the stabbing, he crashed into a utility pole about a half mile away. He later died at Jacobi Medical Center. Monday would have marked the first Memorial Day he would have spent with his new bride.
Hundreds of fellow cab drivers took an hour out of their busy day to retrace the final moments of Guitierrez?s life. The event started at the Mexico Car Service, where Guitierrez worked, and ended where he lost his life on Saw Mill River Road.
Police say 16-year-old Daquan Duncan, of Tuckahoe, is responsible for the murder. They have also charged his friend, 16-year-old Adam Arroyo, with hindering prosecution. Both suspects remain behind bars awaiting their next court appearance.
Guitierrez?s family is trying to raise money to have his body sent back to his native Dominican Republic. The Mexico Car Service is collecting donations for that cause.
