A family-owned business that has been in Yonkers for 75 years is closing its doors for good this weekend.

Grassy Sprain Paint & Hardware on Tuckahoe Road has been a beloved fixture in the community for a long time.

The store was founded in 1950 by the Speight family.

They've had other locations in the past but have been on Tuckahoe Road for the last 30 years.

"As soon as you come in, they took care of you right away," says customer Bruce DeJoseph.

During that time, the store transformed into a true neighborhood institution, where customers could come ask questions and get help for whatever they were working on.

The family says the closure isn't so much about economics but more about some family member's desires to retire.

"I've been here for a long time, I loved every minutes of it, still love every minute of it," says Rodney Speight.

On Thursday, the city recognized the owners for their success and dedication to the community over the last 75 years.

"Even with many chain stores in the neighborhood, this was truly the place that people came to," says Yonkers city councilmember Anthony Merante.

The store officially closes on Saturday.

"The outpouring of support from people, especially now and how much we meant to them, it's a lot," says Gregory Speight.
