The family of Herve Gilles, the Haitian immigrant who was shot and killed by a Spring Valley police officer on Monday, has hired a civil rights attorney.
Manhattan-based civil rights attorney Sanford Rubenstein is representing Gilles' family after the shooting death.
Police say Gilles was fatally shot after he attacked and bit the officer.
Rubenstein says the family wants a fair investigation to determine if the officer followed proper protocol.
Officials say both the department and the Rockland County District Attorney's office are investigating the shooting.
Many members of the community are also outraged by the shooting. Some are questioning why the officer didn't use a stun gun on Gilles instead of shooting him.
