While a Christmas tree is a must for many families during the holidays, it can also be a fire hazard.   

Hastings Fire Chief Martin Gunther says even though Christmas tree fires aren't common, it's better to be safe than sorry. He says the number one tip is to make sure to water the trees to keep them hydrated.

It’s also important to string Christmas trees with the right lights and ensure each set is "UL" certified. This means that each bulb has been properly tested. Extension cords can also be a problem because they can overheat circuits.

Chief Gunther says residents should make sure to pick out a fresh tree because some of them have been out of the ground since October.

If getting a fake tree isn’t an option, the chief says just don’t keep it in the house for too long.

"Put it in as late you can and get it out as soon as possible,” he says.
