A former New York City police officer received a sentence of nine years in prison Wednesday after admitting that he shot two men. The sentence was part of a plea deal.
Brendan Cronin, 29, of Yonkers, pleaded guilty in Sept. 2015 on charges that included attempted murder, assault and driving while intoxicated.
Cronin admitted that in April 2014, while off duty, he used his police-issued 9mm Glock pistol to fire 14 shots into a car stopped at the intersection of Lincoln and Sixth avenues in Pelham. He says he had been at a training class earlier in the day, and then went drinking at a bar in City Island in the Bronx.
The two men inside the car, Joseph Felice and Robert Borrelli, both of New Rochelle, were returning home from a hockey game. Six of the bullets struck Felice, who still has one in his chest after recovering from the injuries. Borrelli escaped harm.
Felice and Borrelli have filed a civil lawsuit against Cronin, his supervisor and the NYPD. They are also calling for zero tolerance for officers who drink and misuse their firearms.
Cronin apologized to the victims during his court appearance.
