A new Spring Valley mother has quite a delivery story to tell after the Thursday’s snowstorm delayed a responding ambulance.
Drewcilla Noel, 24, had no plans to leave her mom's house in Monsey during the nor'easter. At nine months pregnant, however, her baby had different plans.
"I started screaming, ‘I think I'm in labor!’" said Noel.
She says her labor pains came on suddenly and quickly during the height of the storm – about a week before the baby was due.
The ambulance couldn't get there soon enough, but luckily for the new mom, their neighbor, Nate Evans, is an EMT and heard about the delay on the scanner from home.
"I just figured I had to go and help out," said Evans. "From the time I got there till the baby came, it was probably less than 10 minutes."
The 22-year-old said this was his first delivery and that, despite the emergency circumstances, things went as smoothly as possible.
Eventually, the ambulance did take Noel and her baby, named Heaven, to the hospital. She thanked Evans on Friday.
"Thank you so much for delivering my baby girl. You're a hero," she said.
Noel and her 6-pound baby are due to go back home Saturday.
