An elementary school principal has resigned amid an investigation by the New Rochelle school district.
Columbus Elementary School Principal Sonia Nunez abruptly quit less than a month before the end of the school year. News 12 has learned that Nunez is accused of misusing school funds, and allegedly pocketing some of the money for herself.
"There is an ongoing investigation," says a city school district spokesperson. "At the conclusion of the investigation, appropriate action will be taken. While placed on leave, the principal submitted a letter of resignation and will not be returning."
Nunez served as principal at the school since 2012. According to state records, her salary last year was more than $157,000.
News 12 tried speaking with Nunez at her Bronxville home, but her name was no longer listed among residents there.

The district would not disclose when the investigation would end, what they have discovered so far or what the next step would be.
Ken Levy took over as interim principal on Tuesday.
Maria Romero, a grandparent of students at the school, tells News 12 that she received a letter announcing the principal's resignation, but it never explained why.
