Democrats well outnumber Republicans in Rockland County, but it may not look like that by looking at which candidates came out on top.
People didn't go to Barry's Estate Jewelry just for bling this year. During the election, it was treasured as a Trump support station.
"I support him in 2016 and I support him in 2020," says Barry Fixler, the owner of Barry's Estate Jewelry.
Fixler is a lifelong Democrat, enlisting in the party after serving in the Marine Corps.
"I vote for the person. If it's a good Democrat, I vote Democrat. If it's a good Republican, I vote Republican," he says.
Which he did - and it seems many others did as well. While the presidential election nationally is too early to call, President Donald Trump came out the clear winner in Rockland, leading Biden by 12 percentage points.
The reason why this is significant is because Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1 in Rockland County.
Two Republicans are also leading in state legislative seats held by Democrats.
They are the 97th Assembly race and the 38th Senate District race. In both races, Democrats feel absentee ballots will change that, but current results still show them leaning red.
"I think that Trump ran so well in Rockland, that quite certainly helped," says Vincent Reda, former Rockland County GOP chair.
The former GOP chair added it's not a new shift but a reshift.
"That really was a Republican seat at one time, as was the Senate seat, so they're really winning their seats back," says Reda.
