News 12 has learned petitions were filed with the Spring Valley village clerk’s office on Tuesday seeking to dissolve the village - and News 12 obtained a picture of one page with signatures.
Sources say the total number of names that signed range from about 2,600 to 3,000.
Rockland's Board of Elections tells News 12 there are 13,016 registered voters in the village.
That suggests there needs to be about 1,300 valid village resident signatures who are registered voters.
The Department of State also states the clerk has 10 days from the filing to determine if there are enough valid signatures for a referendum.
News 12 filed a request to see the petitions.
It's still unclear who is behind this latest effort and why.
In July 2022, News 12 reported on a similar petition that was started but nothing became of it.
News 12 asked people what they thought about getting rid of the village.
One man said he is in favor because he believes it will save him money on taxes.
Others against it said town taxes could increase.
One man shared the village is "a great one if it's ran right."
News 12 has reported on a number of issues and controversies over the years.
Schenley Vital, a Democrat, is seeking to become the village’s next mayor.
"I'm strongly opposed to any effort, any referendum that would seek to dissolve the village. I think it's inappropriate," said Vital. His list of reasons includes maintaining the village police force and access to elected officials, "being able to reach out to the trustees, the mayors, and the people in power. That just gets further removed."
The village of South Nyack dissolved in 2022 after residents there voted in favor to do so in 2020.
