Some of East Tremont Avenue's longest-standing businesses are joining forces to help strengthen the neighborhood.

About 30 merchants have joined a merchant alliance organized by the Neighborhood Initiatives Development Corporation (NIDC). The group meets monthly to discuss common concerns, share ideas and connect with city agencies that can help address issues impacting local businesses.

"It's very important," said Malcom Gray, NIDC's director of economic development. "The strength of many of our communities is contingent on the strength of our business corridors and our mom-and-pop stores."

"The goal is to educate them and give them the resources so that they could eventually run on their own with these resources," said Ismelia Rodriguez, merchant organizer for NIDC.

Many of the participating businesses have served the Bronx for decades, including Frank's Sport Shop, which has been family-owned for more than 100 years.

Owner Ron Stein says improvements to the neighborhood would benefit everyone.

"You need cleaning the trash cans. You need better lighting," Stein said.

Other merchants say safety and parking remain top concerns.

"Basically, safety. A lot of safety," said Freddy Carrera, owner of Bobby's TV and Radio Service.

Miguel Silvestre, owner of Enelia's Party Supply, says parking continues to be a challenge for customers.
"We're having trouble with the customers. Can't find the parking around this area," Silvestre said.

Despite those concerns, merchants say working together gives them a stronger voice and a better opportunity to help East Tremont's business community continue to grow for years to come.
