Dreamers renew DACA permits as deadline expires
A White Plains organization worked around the clock to help so-called Dreamers renew their permits for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.
Recipients had until Thursday to file the renewal request after President Donald Trump announced he was ending the policy.
In the last month, the Westchester Hispanic Coalition says that the coalition tripled the number of people it normally helps.
The DACA program provides young undocumented immigrants legal status to work and go to school.
Advocates say that the president’s decision has left the 800,000 or so Dreamers in limbo, with their only hope that Congress takes action.
It’s not clear what will happen next, but many Dreamers and their advocates say that after living with DACA for five years, they don't want to be forced to live in the shadows again.
After Thursday, young undocumented immigrants will not be able to apply for renewal of their DACA status.
