A fire engulfed a six-story Yonkers apartment building Thursday night, displacing more than 100 people, but leaving no tenants injured.

According to investigators, the fire broke out in an apartment on the third floor of the Valentine Avenue building Thursday night. The tenant smelled smoke and discovered flames and heavy smoke coming from behind the stove. The residents helped other tenants get out of the building.

Firefighters checked each floor for anyone who might be trapped. They say even with their protective gear, the conditions were too hot to stay in the building, so they moved to rescue tenants from the higher floors with bucket ladders.

Three apartments were completely destroyed and the building had no power Friday afternoon.

According to the Red Cross, people from 50 apartments have been displaced by the fire. Six firefighters were injured in the fire.
