An open discussion was held at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers Tuesday on how health care workers can treat the Zika virus.
The hospital's chief infectious disease specialist, Dr. Peter Berkey, fielded questions from fellow doctors about how to treat potential Zika patients.
Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 82 total Zika cases in the United States. Pregnant women, doctors say, are the most at risk because of possible neurological birth defects.
According to the CDC, thousands of cases have been reported in Central and South America, the Caribbean and Africa. New York has seen 11 cases, with four in the Hudson Valley.
The CDC has issued a travel warning, urging those seeking to start a family to avoid travel to those areas.
There have been at least two reported cases of sexual transmission to pregnant women, including a recent case in Texas.
