A letter sent to millions of registered Democrats is having a backlash effect on voters.
A flier, reportedly sent from the New York State Democratic Committee, titled "voter report card" ends with the line, "If you do not vote this year, we will be interested to hear why not."
Recipients called the tactics "thuggish" and "threatening."
Astorino spokesman Bill O'Reilly says the civil liberty implications of the letter are "truly frightening."
"This is a deeply disturbing new campaign tactic being used by Andrew Cuomo to try to intimidate voters to turn out," O'Reilly said.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo insists that he did not know about the mailer. The Democratic Committee defended the flier, calling it "standard practice used nationwide."
