Officials from the Department of Environmental Conservation surveyed the scene of an oil truck leak Sunday to assess its environmental impacts.
Firefighters say the oil truck was delivering heating oil to the Glendale Apartment Complex at 233rd Street and Bronx River Road around 8 a.m. Saturday when it sprang a leak, sending close to 1,500 gallons of oil spewing out onto the street.
A cleanup crew from New Jersey was also at the scene of the spill Sunday, determining the best spots to lay down absorbent lines. The lines pull the oil from the water but don't absorb the water itself.
A more thorough assessment on how the spill could affect wildlife in and around the river is expected to be done with more DEC workers expected at the scene on Monday.
Officials are still trying to determine a cause for the leak.
