The murder of two NYPD officers in Brooklyn Saturday has sparked outrage among people across Westchester and the Hudson Valley.
Authorities say a man identified as Ismaaiyl Brinsley approached two officers sitting in their car and opened fire. Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were pronounced dead at Brooklyn's Woodhull Hospital. Brinsley then took his own life in a nearby subway station.
A protest against the chokehold death of Eric Garner at the Ridge Hill Shopping Center in Yonkers quickly switched gears when news of the shooting broke out. Organizers joined local police departments across the region in condemning the violence.
Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino says the murders are a crime against society. He released a statement, saying, in part, "The people of Westchester stand in sorrow with every New Yorker and solidarity with the NYPD and all police officers who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe."
