Gov. Andrew Cuomo was in West Haverstraw Monday to promote his "Strong Families, Strong NY" program.
Under the governor's proposal, workers would be entitled to 12 weeks of paid leave to deal with major life events such as the birth of a child or the serious illness or death of a parent or a loved one.
The governor promoted his paid family leave proposal to about 100 people, most of them fellow Democratic elected officials, representatives of community-based organizations and union leaders.
Proponents say the plan would strengthen the workforce and overall economy, especially for women, minorities and low-income workers.
Opponents of the plan say the proposal will increase the cost of doing business, and ultimately also cost jobs
Cuomo also used the rally to push his proposal for a statewide $15 minimum wage.
