A building that once housed a popular restaurant and store in downtown Yonkers is being torn down following a massive fire that left the structure a shell of its former self.
Officials say the fire broke out at a dollar store at 5 South Broadway in Getty Square at around 11:30 p.m. Thursday and quickly spread to surrounding businesses.
The five-alarm blaze was an all-hands-on-deck event for Yonkers firefighters with mutual aid provided by neighboring departments.
Officials say dozens of firefighters suffered minor injuries because of it blaze, including heat exhaustion.
Firefighters were able to protect the neighboring St. John's Episcopal Church, the oldest church in Yonkers.
Crews will not work on the demolition Sunday but will resume demolition work on Monday.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
