Hazmat teams have been sanitizing the Harlem apartment of the first person to be diagnosed with the Ebola virus in New York state.

Dr. Craig Spencer is being treated in isolation at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after testing positive for the virus on Thursday.

Workers with the New York City Office of Emergency Management have been spotted at the apartment, along with officials from the city's Department of Health. Crews were also seen carrying large fans that were used to clean Spencer's apartment.

Spencer returned home last week after treating Ebola patients in Guinea. Upon arrival back in the city, he began monitoring his temperature daily before discovering a fever on Thursday, leading to his hospitalization. Before the fever, Spencer had went about his normal routine, which included riding subways, eating at restaurants and bowling in Brooklyn.

Spencer's diagnosis has prompted New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to issue mandatory quarantines for travelers who had contact with Ebola-infected patients.

On Saturday, Illinois joined New York and New Jersey in enforcing stricter Ebola protocols.
