Couple taken to hospital after car rams into building
A car crashed into a brick wall at an apartment complex in Scarsdale Thursday afternoon, sending a couple to the hospital.
The car crashed through the side of Building B of the Scarsdale Ridge apartment complex on Central Park Avenue, coming to a stop in the laundry room.
Johnny Hernandez, the superintendent of the Scarsdale Ridge apartments, says an elderly man was driving with his wife in the passenger seat.
"There's natural gas coming out -- the car's running, gas, fumes," Hernandez says. "I just reclined the seats, pulled them out as fast as I could."
Hernandez says the wife was crying and the driver was in shock and was repeatedly saying that he'd hit the brake.
The residents of the 12 apartments in the building had to be evacuated. Most of them have been allowed to return, except for the tenants living directly above the laundry room.
News 12 has learned that the husband broke his pelvis but is in good spirits. The wife is expected to be OK.
