County tentatively approves minority housing
A Westchester County Board Committee tentatively approved a plan Monday to build affordable housing for minorities in wealthy, heavily white communities.
County Executive Andy Spano appeared before the committee, claiming the $50 million set aside to build 750 units of affordable housing would not be enough. Spano says, based on current real estate prices, the money may cover 150 new units.
The original agreement, approved in federal court Aug. 10, settled a lawsuit brought by the Anti-Discrimination Center of Metro New York, which alleged that Westchester failed to reduce segregation in some of the county's more affluent communities. According to Spano, the county has given minorities the opportunity to live in certain neighborhoods without building new units.
