Two Westchester County correction officers are recovering from injuries after allegedly being attacked by an inmate.
The correction officers were allegedly attacked at the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla Tuesday evening by an aggressive inmate with mental health issues.
Alonzo West, of the Westchester County Correction Officer Benevolent Association, says one officer sustained breaks to his legs, wrist and hand. That officer will require surgery. The extent of the other officer’s injuries wasn’t yet known, according to West.
This is the second assault on a correction officer by an inmate in just the past two weeks at the Westchester County Jail.
Last month, a 30-year-old correction officer who had been on the job for two months was seriously injured after an inmate allegedly pulled him into his cell.
The Department of Corrections says it’s investigating the incident. Union officials say they are looking to get the inmate, who has not yet been be identified, slapped with an additional three to five years on the sentence he's currently serving.
Union officials say they met with jail administrators Wednesday to discuss staffing levels at the facility.
