Westchester County is reminding current and former service members and their families of the resources available to them.
County Executive Rob Astorino announced the Military Family Appreciation project yesterday at the county office building in White Plains.
The goal is to let Westchester families of military personnel know that the county's Veterans Service Agency is there to help them too. "There is so much help out there to get them straightened out. And if it wasn't for the VA, he wouldn't be here today. He would be dead," says EJ Kearns, the wife of a U.S Navy veteran.
Officials say there are approximately 56,000 veterans in Westchester County representing all periods of conflict, up to and including the current conflict in the Middle East. As of 2012, the Veterans Administration estimates that 20,000 of those veterans are unregistered.
