A city lawmaker is set to introduce a bill that would make school uniforms mandatory in public schools.

Councilman Andy King says the proposal would make New York City public school students some of the best dressed kids in the state.

"After conversations with a number of principals, parents and students, I've decided it's time to do something about our dress wear," said King.

He held a meeting outside M.S. 142 Tuesday to make his case.

Some parents told News 12 that school uniforms would help out their personal budgets.

Critics opposed to the idea have voiced numerous concerns, saying school uniforms stifle creativity and are an overreach of government.

The councilman will introduce the legislation Wednesday during a council meeting. The City Council will then decide whether or not to have a vote on the bill, which would take place in about three to four months.
