Cornwall is known for its quiet county charm, which is why plans for a proposed industrial complex near homes aren’t exactly being well received.

The plans, submitted by Cornwall Logistics LLC for developer TreeTop, would construct five warehouses and almost 2 million square-feet of industrial space on a 197-acre property at 2615 Route 9W.

Hundreds of residents attended a planning board meeting Wednesday night about the proposal after the completion of the project’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement.

“When was someone going to let us know that the plan calls for taking the front of our properties? For our property, it calls for the reconstruction of our driveway,” said one resident. “Really? Is that a joke?”

Dozens of residents and Sen. James Skoufis, who also lives in town, spoke during the public portion of the meeting.

“This project is an insult. It’s an outrage and I’m asking this planning board to do everything to stop it,” said Skoufis. “This project is absolutely out of character for Cornwall. It would completely forever change the face of this community for the worse.”

Intense discussions about downtown revitalization and new business have been underway in Cornwall for several years, but Supervisor Josh Wojehowski says he has reservations about the cluster of warehouses.

“It does not seem to fit too well with the comprehensive plan,” said Wojehowski. “If they came back with something else, perhaps, that would change people’s minds but I think right now, it just seems so out of character with the community.”

Wojehowski says right now, it’s up to the planning board to decide the project’s fate.

So far, officials say the developer has not made it clear what company would move into the warehouse if the project was approved.

News 12 left a message for TreeTop for information but hasn’t heard back. There’s no phone number listed on the Cornwall Logistics LLC website.

Residents raised a host of concerns with the warehouse plans from storm water runoff, to traffic and the preservation of trees.
